OK, I get it that Blake Snell is a super-star in the making. And he did have 13 strikeouts last night. What I don’t get is why no one is pointing out that he also lost the game. Yes, the Durham Bulls could have at least scored a run or two and instead were shut out for the 11th time this season. However, it was Snell that gave up 7 hits and 3 runs. And it’s Snell who has the worst WHIP among the top four Bulls starters, the worst ERA, and is the least efficient (pitches per out). The young man, as impressive as he is, has a ways to go.

He will undoubtedly get there. As a Bulls fan, I’m reminded of David Price’s tour as a Bull. He also was a great pitcher in the making, but he didn’t really help the Bulls win many games.

Meanwhile, thanks to Cheryl Pursell (@CherylPursell) who takes photos for the Noise Nation blog. Great shots from last night. It does look like Richie Shaffer is figuring out where to land, doesn’t it? Check out the Noise Nation blog for another look at Snell’s performance.

And what’s that “cheesesteaks” business all about?

  1. Well the cheesesteak stuff goes kinda like this: A couple years ago, in a stroke of insanity or brilliance, the organization decided to start putting bacon on stuff. We've got bacon on hats and shirts and jerseys and sweat pants. People are eating it up (sorry). I think they make more money selling stuff with bacon on it than game tickets--and we're near the top in that category as well. So, what else to do? Let's find another food to put on hats and jerseys. Anyone got any regional ideas? Oh, yeah, folks love the cheesesteaks! Wait, I've got another idea, we'll make two versions one with onions and one without! Double the sales! Follow the money is what I'm trying to say.

Yes, Snell has to clean some things up, but it's all there. And for once, we're one of the better hitting teams in the IL, so there's that. I feel you on the AAA fandom, though--we want the talented prospects but we don't want to see them struggle (see also, #1 Phillies prospect JP Crawford 0-for-4 last night, 3K) but if they do too well they'll be up with the big club. Just can't win sometimes here in the semi-pros.

    1. Thanks for cheesesteak explanation. Sounds like this year's "Durm" promotion for Bulls. Did not see/listen to June 11 debacle. Look forward to your coverage. Too awful for me to write about.
