It's tough for me to pick "best" pitchers as a lot of them are memorable, but if I had to rank them, I think I'd do this:
Starters
#1 - Talbot
#2 - Standridge
#3 - Hellickson (he was REALLY dominant for his short time)
Relievers
#1 - Gardner (I sort of forgot how good he was, but he was a big reason the Bulls won back to back)
#2 - Abreu
#3 - Bateman
Callaway shows up a lot in these lists, but I didn't see him pitch that I can recall, but a 1998-2000 era fan would probably remember him based on the numbers above.
Search on a player's name at Baseball-Reference.com for major and minor league careers of all of these players.
Conspicuous by his absence is David Price. His performance wasn't good while with us, but I know he was working on stuff.

The absence of ballplayers like David Price (and Evan Longoria) is something of a theme of this series. The question we are trying to get at is not who are the great ballplayers who have worn a Bulls uniform, but who are the great Durham Bulls? Price only pitched 52 innings over two seasons with the Bulls and wasn't particularly helpful in winning games (ERA 4+). Is he a terrific ballplayer? Of course he is.
ReplyDeleteOver at http://bit.ly/UjG5ci, Eric Bracke has made up a list of great ballplayers who have come through Durham. He's got David Price, Evan Longoria, James Shields, and several others on his list. Worth a look.
Yeah Chris Wise is spot on here. The wonder players tended to be with the Bulls for short periods or not be terribly good while there. Obviously if you're picking the best pitcher to go through Durham in the AAA era, it'd have to be Price, but this is a Bulls fan blog, not a Rays fan blog.
